“Meet A Local”: Chris Paul, Owner & General Manager of Banff Ave. Brewing Co.

We’re introducing you to some of our favourite places and people as we count down the days to ShowCanada…

Alberta Film Commission

Chris Paul

Chris Paul is the General Manager of Banff Ave Brewing Co., a role he has held for nearly three years. Originally from just outside Toronto, Ontario, Chris moved west after years of hearing friends’ stories about life in the Rockies. Now firmly part of the Banff community, he enjoys playing in local baseball and hockey leagues and building a career in hospitality while welcoming visitors from around the world to the town he calls home.

How long have you lived in Banff?

I arrived in Banff in early 2013 to spend a winter at the ski hill after graduating from university. Little did I know, it would become my home for the next 13 years, and the foreseeable future, after forming great friendships and working alongside some incredible hospitality professionals.

What do you like best about working/living in Banff?

The great outdoors and spirit of adventure keep this lifestyle exciting. Working in town also means meeting people from all over the world, having great conversations, and constantly forming new friendships.

A friend lands in Banff with exactly 24 hours and zero agenda. Where are you taking them?

Whenever friends come for a short visit and time is limited, it’s easy to enjoy some great experiences right here in town. Driving the Minnewanka Scenic Loop, stopping at Vermilion Lakes, and visiting the Hoodoos Viewpoint on Tunnel Mountain, makes for a great circuit that showcases the beautiful area surrounding Banff. Taking the Mt. Norquay chairlift to enjoy the views in the summer, or going tubing in the winter (if skiing isn’t on the list), is always a fun option. And of course, there are endless dining possibilities along Banff Avenue, with something for everyone.

Where’s your favorite view that doesn’t make it onto postcards?

No better view than our very own 2nd floor patio that overlooks Banff Ave. with a scenic mountain backdrop. Great for people watching, and no better way to get some pictures for the socials while enjoying a frosty beer.

Which celebrity do you think would fit best in Banff, and why?

Ryan Gosling. He’s a Canadian that has the right mix of humor and humility and seems like the kind of person that would enjoy the great outdoors, hiking, skiing, and grabbing a beer after a long day in the mountains.

What film best captures the spirit of Banff for you, and why?

Mystery, Alaska is a film I grew up watching, and moving to Banff brought a lot of similar feelings. The strong local connections and the outdoor lifestyle feel very familiar. Just like when the big NHL comes to the small town in the movie (Which is filmed in Canmore), Banff is a place where the whole world comes to us and it captures the hearts of everyone who visits.

What’s your favorite beer on the menu, and why?

Black pilsner. It’s a perfect gateway to dark beers. The dark Schwarzbier that drinks light. Something for those that tend not to be too adventurous, but still willing to try something new.

What makes Banff the perfect place to toast a 40-year milestone?

Banff is the perfect place to toast a 40-year milestone because its breathtaking mountain setting, strong sense of community, and spirit of adventure make it a place where meaningful moments and lasting memories naturally come together.

The countdown to ShowCanada’s 40th anniversary is on… see you at Banff Ave. Brewing for Landmark Cinema’s ShowCanada Kick Off on Monday May 18.
