“Meet A Local”: Bunny Julius, Owner & General Manager of MELISSA’S MISSTEAK

We’re introducing you to some of our favourite places and people as we count down the days to ShowCanada…

Alberta Film Commission

Bunny Julius is the Owner & General Manager at Melissa’s MisSteak, one of Banff’s well-known steakhouse restaurants serving breakfast through dinner in the heart of Alberta’s Rockies, with the most extensive sports and entertainment setup in the area. He has been working at the Banff institution for over 40 years, championing its role as a lively gathering spot for both locals and visitors.

How long have you lived in Banff/Alberta, and what brought you to the area?

I arrived 40 years ago to ski….and never left!

What do you like best about working and living in Banff?

It’s a small town that moves fast.

A friend lands in Banff with exactly 24 hours and zero agenda. Where are you taking them (i.e. hidden gems, fave attractions, fave local restaurants, etc.)?

I would take them to the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel, around the golf course to the Surprise Corner Viewpoint. Then I’d take them to Tunnel Mountain, around the Lake Minnewanka loop and to the top of Mount Norquay for lunch at the Cliffhouse Bistro tea house. Finally, I’d take them to dinner at The Grizzly House or Castello Italiana, and send them off the next day after breakfast at Melissa’s.

Where’s your favourite view that doesn’t make it onto postcards, and why?

My favourite view is from the Banff Centre, looking down the Fairholme Range, because you can only really see it from that location.

Melissa’s MisSteak is a Banff landmark, what’s the origin story?

Melissa’s was opened in 1978, and was later sold to all the existing managers at the time. I started in 1985 as a dishwasher, then worked in the kitchen, as a bus boy, server, then bartender. I purchased Melissa’s in 2010 and have been running it ever since.

What’s the most “only in Banff” moment you’ve witnessed inside Melissa’s MisSteak?

There have been way too many to mention – and you wouldn’t believe me anyway!

Melissa’s MisSteak has been part of Banff for over 40 years – what do you think keeps people coming back?

Great staff, great food, relaxed atmosphere, and always a fun time.

What’s your favourite Melissa’s menu item?

I love the steaks and burgers. You can never go wrong with breakfast.

The countdown to ShowCanada’s 40th anniversary is on…see you at Melissa’s for Warner Bros. Pictures Canada annual Wednesday night party!
